Early in 1891, George B. Sprowls gave up his job as a country school teacher and with the sum of $50.00 entered into the sale of buggies, wagons, harness', farm implements, cook stoves and general merchandise. By early 1900 he had expanded...purchasing in car load lots for his own trade and also reselling to other stores, shipping to such destinations as Cameron, East Liverpool, Wylandville, Greensburg, Moundsville, Elm Grove and other points having rail service.

By the standards of the time he was considered the original Discounter, and a flagrant promoter going so far as purchasing and selling a carload of Christmas candy and having, for many years, an annual event known far and wide as "The Big Party." In his infancy, the foundation of our business was built on the best goods available offered at bed rock prices, backed up by personal service.

In later years, "Geo. B" founded two other businesses, was always active in community affairs, County, State and National politics (serving a term in the Pennsylvania State Senate) as well as being a delegate to the National Convention where he was instrumental in Franklin D. Roosevelt winning the nomination and later the presidency. On a motorcade from Pittsburgh to Wheeling, President Roosevelt stopped in front of our store to exchange regards to an old friend and supporter.

Our buggies and wagons , farm products, pumps, household goods, heating and cook stoves have been replaced by new merchandise, but the company remains the same. By people who back up what they sell. Generations later, our merchandise offering remains much the same, combining the latest technology and convenience with the basic country hardware.
